5 Ways To Add Inspiration To Your Home
This is an incredibly strange time for everyone. There is so much uncertainty and anxiety about what the future will be, that this week I wanted to focus on fun ways to offer you some suggestions to give your home a much needed boost of inspiration. Here are 5 ways to add inspiration to your home. If you would like more inspiration, then check out our instagram page!
The first quick, economical fix is transforming your furniture with chalk paint. Most of us have in our homes furniture that is uninspiring and bland, chalk paint is such a quick transformation.
There is no priming or undercoat required, literally two coats of chalk paint and a quick rub of furniture wax. There are so many to choose from online, the ultimate brand is Annie Sloan and the colour choice is amazing.
If you want to take the transformation one step further then add some quirky hardware.
Number two is shelf styling and revamping. Shelves and bookcases can become dumping grounds and any idea of style and beauty thrown out the window.
This is the time to curate and edit. Look around your home for any objects and items of interest to pull together. Books are obviously a great option but additionally how about treasures from your travels or even a nostalgic toy collection. It’s your home and your vision.
To add another dimension, add wallpaper behind the shelves. I have used here Londinium by Graham and Brown, the black and white composition provides a brilliant backdrop to my curated collection.
Number three the inspiration board. It’s all in the name and right now, in this current climate we need inspiration. This isn’t your regular notice board. This isn’t somewhere to dump your leaflets or reminders.
This is where to pin things that inspire you. For me, being a designer it’s fabrics but it will be different for all of us, maybe it’s postcards from your travels or personal sketches, for my husband it’s memory cards for his writing. You decide and put it somewhere prominent so you always feel inspired.
This was very easy to make, the materials used are: polystyrene, fabric, hessian, elastic or ribbon and a staple gun. There is a short video on my instagram (link below).
Number 4 the gallery wall. Typically gallery walls are used in hallways and stairwells to display family photographs but actually they are a great addition in any room. It doesn’t have to be photographs it can be a collection of your favourite art. Sometimes we own art that is too small to hang on its own so adding it to a gallery is the perfect option.
Choosing to create a gallery wall in a bedroom allows you time to enjoy your collection before you go to bed and when you wake up in the morning.
There are some important points to remember; to start with the collection needs to have cohesion. Similar colours and scale creates a more balanced aesthetic.
The framing and mounts also require some thought. For some collections varying colours or styles of frames may work but for others the same frames and mounts may be more appropriate.
Lastly how you arrange your collection is probably the most important factor. Spend time laying out your collection, measuring and sketching before you start hammering into the wall.
Number 5 is Biophilia, the love of living things and nature. How does this fit into our homes? Well it’s proven that bringing nature into our homes can reduce stress, improve cognitive function and enhance mood and creativity.
Biophilia design can be added to your home in many ways; through using natural materials on your walls, floors and furniture, choosing colours and patterns reflected in nature.
Other than creating a reclaimed timber wall (which will look incredible), the easiest way to add Biophilia into our homes is through plants. It can be large plants in decorative pots or baskets or trailing greenery hanging from your ceiling or a herb garden on your window cill.
Large established plants can be expensive, so if you have the time and patience take a cutting from an existing plant, keep the stem in water until it establishes some roots and then plant away.
Our surroundings play a huge part in how we feel and cope with the changing climate. Whilst we are home for the unforeseen future investing some time in our homes will help us find focus and respite from the challenges we face.
