How To Create A Walk-In Wardrobe?

Allocating The Space.

How to create a walk-in wardrobe? We love designing walk-in wardrobes because they are such a fun space to design. This is a space that’s sole purpose is to house our clothes, bags and shoes, so what’s not to love!

For clients who are renovating or creating spaces from scratch, this is a much easier task. We can create the perfect layout based exactly on their requirements and how many items they need to house.

For layouts that are already established, sometimes we are lucky and we find a smaller bedroom next to the master that we can reconfigure to become the clients walk-in wardrobe.

For those of you who are thinking, walk-in wardrobe I should be so lucky, I have no space for that! You will be surprised how easy it is to create one! If you have a decent sized bedroom, there are opportunities to carve out space for this much desired area! Creative corners or part stud walls are great ways to section off a part of your bedroom. We have used some incredible innovative designs to sneak these spaces into clients rooms.

The Decor!

In terms of decor, this is a room to have fun with, don’t hold back or play it safe. Create a space that is amazing and flamboyant so it always brings a smile to your face.

How To Create A Walk-In Wardrobe?

I have recently finished my own walk-in wardrobe and although it isn’t as big as I would like (could it ever be!), it is packed with personality and drama. If this is a windowless space (like mine) embrace the darker, moodier paint shades or wood tones. Let the space draw you in with something wonderful and different.

For our wardrobe I chose a rich blue tone called Blue Print by Mylands. It draws you into the space and provides a brilliant backdrop for all my displayed items. For the wonderful and different aspect, I added rose gold leaf to elements of the design. The flat doors have defined strips of gold leaf and the shoe display is also wrapped in the rose gold leaf, allowing all my favourite shoes and bags pop out into view. When we design this space for our clients, we push our clients to embrace new materials and colour palettes and the finished creation is always something amazing!

The Design

The design of the walk-in wardrobe is the most important element. We want to absolutely maximise every inch of hidden space so that we can create as much storage as possible.

How we display clients belongings is also very personal. Some clients want everything on display (brilliant if you’re neat and tidy), whilst other clients prefer everything hidden behind doors (allowing them to be as messy as they like)! We often design a combination of both. Doors to hide day clothes, bags and sports wear and display shelving and rails for shoes, gorgeous dresses and beautiful accessories.

For smaller spaces, we combine deeper units for hanging clothes with narrow shelves for folding, shoes and bags. We also create focal points to increase the sense of scale and to encourage your eye line to linger.

The Walk-in Wardrobe Hack

For my own walk-in wardrobe I actually combined flat pack wardrobes, with bespoke joinery. We bought the flat pack years ago, when we needed to store our clothes quickly. When we then came to designing the room properly, it seemed wasteful to throw out perfectly good wardrobes.

The solution to making the whole space work was to incorporate the existing units into my design and then design bespoke joinery around them to maximise the space and allow the best flow and function.

To unify the whole space, all the new joinery and flatpack were painted the same colour. I also designed the depth of the bespoke shelving to be the same as the existing units, again to maintain consistency.

The lighting

Lighting is one of the most important elements of any space and the walk-in wardrobe is no different. A combination of different light sources is essential to make this room work. This space definitely calls out for highlight lighting to spotlight all your beautiful pieces. The way you light this space also allows you to control where you want your eye line to be drawn to.

For example in my walk-in wardrobe as it is spatially limited, I wanted to draw your eye line to the back, gold leafed shoe display. We added hidden LED strips down the sides of the joinery, so it hits the gold leaf and pops out the warm gold tone to the room.

It may seem like a lot of effort to go to for this small space in your home, but every time I walk into my wardrobe area it wraps me in joy and makes me feel special. Isn’t that what we want from our homes, to lift our spirits and make us feel the best versions of our self? That is surely even more important in the world we’re living in currently.
