Bespoke Joinery in your home!
Bespoke Joinery in your home!
This week I have been designing various custom joinery projects for my clients. This is why I decided to feature Bespoke Joinery in your home on the blog this week. I love designing and managing fabrication of custom joinery. I truly believe that bespoke joinery can really make a space. It allows me as a designer to design something that is truly unique for my clients and it also means that we create essentially a piece of furniture that fits perfectly in your space. What is joinery?
When I first meet a client and we begin to talk about their project and what they want to achieve from their space, bespoke joinery is one of the topics I want to cover. If this is a first project for a client, often they don’t know what I mean when I mention bespoke joinery.
Joinery is affectively the method by which two or more pieces of wood are connected. When it comes to our homes it covers everything from bookshelves, to wardrobes, to cabinets to kitchens. Any custom piece of furniture that is made from wood is basically joinery.
Why should we invest in joinery in our homes?
I use the word “invest” because that’s what it is an investment. The cost of bespoke joinery is not cheap. This is custom furniture, that is being designed and fabricated to your personal needs and fitted to your unique space, so obviously it is reflected in the price.
Most of us really want our homes to look fantastic. We envisage beautiful aesthetics that represent you and your loved ones. We want to maximise our spaces and enjoy clutter- free homes. For this to be achieved our rooms have to have a very important practical element, storage.
Now of course it is possible to buy ready made storage and in many cases that’s a suitable solution. What bespoke joinery gives you, is an opportunity to create some personalised furniture. It is created to house everything you need it to and to fit the space perfectly. I also believe that unless you live in an enormous Georgian house with huge rooms, bespoke joinery really allows you to make the most of the spaces you have. It can also have a huge impact on how spacious the room feels.
Joinery also provides an opportunity to create something truly unique to you, something that no one else has. When it is does right, it is often superior in quality to your ready-made option, meaning it will last longer and look better.
It can be used to replicate furniture or features that you already have. Allowing the space to maintain uniformity and not a clash of styles or features.
Ideal storage solutions and wow factor additions can also add value to your property. It’s a big draw to potential buyers who enjoy the aesthetics of the joinery and the practical benefits it brings.
Where should we use custom joinery?
Bespoke joinery can be used in any room in the house. If you have a budget to stick to, I recommend you use it in the key rooms of the house.
The Kitchen
Renovating your kitchen is a huge project to take on in your home. It is always a big investment and therefore you want to get it right. Whilst there are a wide variety of high street kitchen companies, that offer competitive prices and stylish designs, you will be compromising your design to fit with their options.
A bespoke kitchen, designed and fabricated for your space offers so much more versatility. Every cabinet is going to fit your space perfectly, with no need for filler panels and annoying compromises. There is flexibility with designing your own kitchen so that it fits your requirements. Bespoke pantries, cupboards and draws of any size, wall units that use every inch of room height, all this maximises how you use your kitchen. Although bespoke joinery is expensive, when we design and fabricate kitchens for clients, it is much more affordable than if you go to the designer kitchen suppliers.
Living room joinery
This is an incredibly popular addition for home owners. The living room often cries out for joinery for a number of reasons. Firstly this is the space that we want to relax in, snuggle in and feel most at home. By adding wood, it adds warmth and comfort to the space. Joinery provides an opportunity to store books, treasures, toys and family photos and other paraphernalia that we insist on keeping in our homes.
It can create a brilliant feature and can add balance to a room. Allowing key features such as TV’s, fires or art work to be beautifully framed. I recently visited a clients new build home, a lovely blank canvas but blank was certainly the word for the living room. With no fireplace or feature to attract the eye, it was bland. We designed bespoke joinery to frame a fire, with TV recessed above and flagged either sides with cabinets and bookcases. Suddenly a bland room turns into a wow room!
Wardobes
The bedroom is an important space to get right. With its main criteria to encourage relaxation and sleep, a cluttered space with clothes everywhere is going to hinder its purpose. Therefore storage is hugely important in this room. Stylish storage that maximises space and stores clothes in organised, space efficient ways. Bespoke joinery allows you to do this, you can custom your wardrobes to fit whatever you want in them.
We recently designed joinery for a walk in wardrobe. I counted every pair of trainers, boots and stilettos so that every shoe had its own compartment (with obviously spares for future proofing!) We also created a bold statement with our design, by hand painting it in a vibrant blue colour palette with gold leaf additions, again not possible with your off the shelf options.
The hide-away office
Suddenly, for the first time, many of us are facing working from home. Even as life returns to some sort of normal there is much speculation that many companies will encourage their staff to continue with flexible working both from home and in the office. Now if you already have your own home office, then brilliant, no problem. But what if that room doesn’t exist for you? How can you create an office during working hours that can then disappear at the end of your working day?
Again bespoke joinery offers this solution. I recently designed secret foldaway desks in a dining room for two clients, who both found themselves working from home. The joinery was designed to look beautiful and stylish in the room, but inside we designed secret desks that unfolded during their working day to house their monitors and office paraphernalia. A perfect solution and also maximises the rooms usage.
The point is bespoke joinery is a huge asset to a home. It takes a space from bland to wow. It creates so much more range and diversity in terms of storage and design.
We use our own in-house joinery team for our bespoke joinery. If you would like us to design and manufacture joinery that is unique to you, then please get in touch.
