Interior Design At Christmas
Surrey Interior Designer
Take Time & Enjoy The Christmas Decor!
It’s Christmas and as a Surrey Interior Designer, it is a busy time. I am married to an actor and so every Christmas I lose him to the world of Pantomime (oh no I don’t) and become what is known in the business as a Pantomime widow!
Now before we get into the Christmas fun, don’t forget to sign up to our newsletter! We share behind the scenes, expert tips for renovating your home and all our current news.
It is so easy to see Christmas as a chore (and don’t get me wrong some days it really is). It is important to cherish the time we spend with our families. This year I was complaining that decorating our house takes two and a half days. Now obviously I fully accept responsibility for this! I am an interior designer and so making homes look incredible is my job and obviously this extends to Christmas. When I was lifting the boxes of decorations from our loft, my nine-year-old daughter became so excited. She wanted me to list out all the areas of our Surrey home that we would be decorating. As I took her through it all, she became more and more excited! I realised this isn’t just my job but a memory maker. As we moved from task to task her joy became infectious.
Let’s Enjoy the Snuggle!
What I do love about Christmas is the traditions that we all create and get to replay every year. I love that we decorate the tree on the same Sunday every year, turn on all our outdoor lights with our street (the best street in Surrey btw) and watch the same Christmas movies with the tree sparkling and the fire glowing.
Taking the time to unwind and snuggle in your home is vital. It is the one time of year where we are actually encouraged to do so! It’s cold outside, the décor inside looks fantastic, all our favourite films are showing. We need to make sure our homes are ready for us to enjoy them.
Treating yourself to the ultimate soft throw or deciding to spend on that ottoman you’ve had your eye on, is a great place to spend before you hibernate to snuggle. It is also a purchase you get to enjoy all year round!
How To decorate for Christmas- Top Tips by Interior Designer Surrey, London & UK.
Your Christmas décor needs to indulge this snuggly time. Every year I’m asked to talk about how to decorate your home for Christmas. I obviously love this topic, particularly for anyone who knows me, will know that I love all shinny metallics! If you stand still long enough I will gold leaf you! I do think though, we have a responsibility to be ethical about our waste. I am not an advocate for changing all your decorations each year in favour of a creating a new theme. It is wasteful and costly and not needed. I do enjoy adding to our collection each year and I love the tradition of the girls adding one decoration each to our tree. If we go somewhere festive then the decoration we choose is another great memory to relive each year.
If you do want to have a change each year, one tip that works well is to invest in clear, openable baubles. Then each year you can add different sparkle or foliage and you get a new “theme” without being wasteful!
Enjoy Time with Friends & Family!
Christmas is also about regrouping with your favourite people. Life stops for a while, and you can finally see those friends or family member you’ve been missing. If you’re anything like me, then to maximise my enjoyment of social occasions the house needs to look fabulous!
It gives me so much joy for everything to sparkle, but also it is such a mood boaster for guests to walk into a beautifully decorated home.
Surrey homes can also be situated in such beautiful country settings, that for visiting friends and family the magic begins when they drive up to your home.
If I’m hosting a meal, I love my table to look gorgeous. I have a second table that I bring in so I can seat fourteen people. A while back I purchased a large, commercial tablecloth that covers both tables. I have opted for black because it is a great back drop for foliage and all things sparkly. I love using foliage down the middle with candles intersperse and adding something special to each place setting.
Formal sit downs can be exhausting and so I usually favour the kitchen island set up. This works so well. I add cocktails, sparklers, grazing platters and beautiful bowls of snacks to my kitchen island and then let my guests help themselves.
It is a game changer! Firstly, it looks incredible when everyone walks in, and you don’t have to do anything because the entire set up is created before anyone even comes!
Make Your Home work For You -Interior designer Surrey, London & UK
Although we are sharing our Christmas decorating tips, it is a good reminder to remember that how we design our kitchens, impacts how we get to enjoy our homes all year round.
In our initial Drill Down Chat, we spend a lot of time really understanding how our clients like to live, enjoy life and their spaces.
Last year we worked with a client who loves entertaining and so from our in-depth consultation we knew that this had to play a huge part in the redesign of their home. This resulted in us creating a huge island for grazing and partying, with a liquid brass worktop. We designed and fabricated a hidden cocktail cupboard which is finished in gold leaf and beautifully lit. When we planned the spatial planning, we made sure the table was moveable, so a dance floor was effortlessly created. This in-depth planning means this family gets to enjoy their kitchen and home all year round.
If this Christmas you realise your home isn’t fulfilling its snuggling, social able potential, then contact us in January to book our complimentary phone consultation.
