Cosy Kingston
Victorian Kitchen Layout.
Cosy Kingston was a real dream project to work on. A Victorian property with great bones but a dreadful layout!
The original layout of the open plan space, made the room feel cut off, cramped and cluttered. The redesign allowed us to reconfigure the different zones and create much needed circulation space.
The pivotal point of the successful design, was to remove the current breakfast bar that divided the space and add a narrow kitchen island to the centre of the room. We continued the line of cabinets in the island and then dropped down into a dining table. By keeping all the prep and dining space in the middle of the room we freed up the end of the room for a living zone with an incredible, vibrant rug.
The before and after images below highlight how a simple layout change can create more space and flow to a room.
A Love of Nature.
Our client loves nature, plants, green tones and texture, and we worked hard to weave all this into the design. To maximise the use of the budget we reused most of the existing cabinets and designed the space to slot them into new positions. We sourced new doors, which were sprayed in one of our favourite Little Greene colours and then added a warm brass trim that we used as our metallic thread throughout the space. The quartz worktop by Caesarstone is a lovely, warm tone with green hues and this teams well with the cabinetry, colour palette & incredible wallpaper. To focus the eye to the centre of the room, we installed an oversize glass pendant with brass trims, keeping it clear so the view of the garden can be seen through the oversized shade.
The wallpaper by Arte really makes the space. The client wanted wallpaper from the start, but we felt that a bold print would be overpowering with all the other elements in the room. The shade and texture of the paper we selected is understated but adds such dimension to the space. It leads you into the room and straight out to the garden and the connection to nature our client really wanted to enjoy.
Display Opportunity!
Storage is key to any successful design and we maximised the cupboard storage by adding taller wall cupboards and a large console cabinet under the TV.
We also added some rustic oak shelves to what was an empty wall, which then allowed us to have a display opportunity with more biophilic additions to bring beauty and warmth to the room.
The Snug
To contrast the green palette we added a rose pink velvet sofa, an incredible vibrant rug (giving our client her floral fix) and warm timber tones and textures. The floor is a wood effect tile, warm but practical for high traffic and dogs.
The before image below shows the damaged pine flooring, and the lack of zone definition, which resulted in the dining table and sofa being squashed together.
The Bathroom.
We continued the colour palette & warm brass metals into the family bathroom, again mixing in a walnut vanity for contrasting textures. The use of light floor tiles with strong, emerald wall tiles makes the floor space seem bigger and encourages your eye line to follow the tiles up into the space.
The Living Room
Burnt orange is the perfect partner in crime to a rich, green wall palette. This was the colour combo we knew would create a living room that both sang & cocooned. Bespoke sofas, window treatments, cushions & art work all give the room a cosy yet eclectic feel.
