This kitchen extension in South London completely transformed our clients home. Our clients desperately wanted to enjoy their garden views, but also wanted to achieve a warm, cosy feel in their new space.

The solution was to divide up the window wall into two large sections of Crittall doors and add a ceiling hung, feature fire. By creating this strong feature, it also defined all the zoning for the room. Like many kitchen extensions, this new space had to be multi-talented and adapt to how the family wanted to use it.

The ceiling hung fire established the seating zone, where possible we always design seating areas to be as close to the external views. We are big believers in the power of Biophilic design (bringing the outside in), with so many proven, health benefits it is very important that our clients enjoy that connection to nature as much as possible. The bespoke bookcase with hidden accent lighting, also helped to cement the seating zone. Not only providing some much needed storage, but also creating a back drop to highlight some of the families treasures.

Our clever spatial planning also allowed us to design the dining area to maximise those garden views. By designing bench seating as a continuation of the kitchen units, it maximised the space and maintained a sense of flow and consistency.

Modern extensions can be challenging spaces to add character. By installing an entire wall of reclaimed brick slips, the kitchen was instantly transformed and the room took on its own personality. Brick slips are a fantastic alternative to building an entire wall of expensive, reclaimed brick.

The diverse material palette also helped to bring an eclectic feel to this space, the strength of the black Crittall doors, bookending both ends of the kitchen, are off set with warming tones of wood, brass and leather. The material choice was used consistently through the kitchen, with materials such as brass being used in the lighting, back splash, sink, taps and unit handles.

Although we wanted the kitchen units to play their own part in this extension, we didn’t want them to distract from the strong material palette. The solution was to finish them in a tranquil green, that replicates the connection to nature and compliments the chosen aesthetics. We chose a hardy quartz for all worktops, using a waterfall design for the island for extra luxury and impact.

The new extension has dramatically improved our clients’ lives, creating a space they can all enjoy together and a connection to the outside and nature that brings a calming zen to their lives.
