SHOULD WE INVEST IN INTERIOR DESIGN FOR OUR HOMES?
Our Busy Lives
Life is busy! We have never worked longer hours, had more online exposure and been required to juggle as many different factors as we do now. It isn’t sustainable and it’s the reason why we get ill, become depressed and often burnout.
Now it’s nothing new to say we must look after ourselves. Over the last decade we have understood more and more the importance of regular exercise, a healthy diet and even carving out time for reflection and meditation.
Occasionally it is written about the importance of our surroundings. Good design can have positive effects on us. You may even have heard of the term Biophilia, how our interior choices can connect us to nature.
The Wellbeing Benefit of Interior Design
Is it worth it and does it work? We’ve all walked into that hotel, bar or gallery that has incredible interior design. You are instantly wowed, uplifted and excited to be in that space. We don’t often analyse why it makes us feel like that. We just know it completely impacts how we feel and affects our enjoyment of our time in the space.
The same can be achieved in our homes. When we invest in interior design in our homes, we can create spaces that lift, rejuvenate and cocoon us. Ultimately in the world we live in today, we need our homes to be our battery chargers. So we can have that essential rest bite and recuperation before we launch back out to continue our busy lives.
So how do we achieve this? The first part is understanding what it is you want from your home and how you want to feel in different spaces? When we work with clients, we start our design process with the Drill Down Chat. We spend a lot of time learning everything we can about our clients. What they do, how they like to relax, places they travel, emotive responses they have in different spaces they visit, and the list goes on… From uncovering this vital information, we can then tailor our designs, layouts & material selections to completely suit our clients, needs and dreams.
Bespoke Interior Design-Each Room Plays a Different Part!
Understanding that different spaces in your home can produce different emotive responses is key to the success of your renovation project. If we know the emotions we want to feel in each space, then we can choose layouts and materials that will achieve these feelings.
This all comes back to understanding your unique needs from the very start. Because we are all different and therefore want to have different experiences.
For example, in my ensuite (which is a wet room) at home, I want to feel energised, focused, and efficient for the day ahead. The layout is therefore tailored towards the ultimate shower experience. With different niches for all my products, a walk-in shower for speed and ease and jewel colour mosaics that lift my spirit and energise me.
Interestingly I have opted for a different experience in our large (SPA bathroom). As here I want to relax, soak in my large bath and reflect my days achievements.
A lot of the projects we work on have multiple lounge spaces. We usually create different experiences in the different rooms. If the family room is going to be a teenage hangout, a place for being with friends and gaming, then often the colour palette and material choice is more exciting and vibrant. Compared to the parent’s lounge where we often mute the colour palette and material choice to create the ultimate relaxing retreat.
Choosing Your Interior Design Material Palette.
So how do we know what materials to put in what spaces and ultimately what finishes achieve what emotive responses? A lot comes down to your gut reaction. When you touch velvet or wool or even a beautiful timber floor, it feels luxurious, with lots of depth and we connect those emotions to relaxation. On the opposite scale of our emotive responses, when we see a hard concrete floor, or a brass kitchen splash back, or a shiny marble worktop, we tend to feel energised, excited and stimulated.
The reason Biophilia is a huge element in interior design is because studies have shown that when we add large expanses of natural timber in our homes, it reduces our heart rate, and calms us down. Considering how we live our lives, that is a pretty powerful material to have in your home.
Ultimately when you work with an interior designer, we know what materials create which emotive responses. We have knowledge on the new products being developed every day that add to the experiences in your home.
Good Interior Design Equals Efficiency.
Good interior design in your home makes you more efficient! How? Your bespoke needs should be tailored for you in your home. If you are a great cook, then we design kitchens with hidden walk-in pantries, drawers with every type of internal organisation and layouts that suit how you like to move around the space.
The morning routine in every household is frantic. Imagine a home with rails, drawers and niches for everything you own. With a rotating rail to bring clothes to view and areas to line up your week’s outfits in advance.
Home studies are often an essential space in the home. We use clever joinery that stores and organises all elements of your working life. We have added rising desks, incredible zoom moments and even concealed whisky cabinets to make our clients experiences the best they can be.
This is just some examples of how great design can hugely impact how efficient you are.
Should We Invest in Interior Design for Our Homes?
In my view it is essential! We can’t reduce our workflow, our kids’ activities, or time online, but we can make our homes our battery chargers. It is not a luxury, but an essential requirement to thriving.
In a time, poor culture, investing in an interior designer is hugely beneficial. Going it alone only adds another layer of stress to your life. When we work with clients, we have an organised, design processes, where we take control of the whole project. Our meetings with you are exciting and efficient. We do the rest, leaving you with a home that nurtures and excites you.
