The Ultimate Luxury Bathroom!
Interior Designer Surrey, London, UK
Surrey Interior Designer – What is a Luxury Bathroom?
For me nothing says luxury more than a beautifully designed bathroom. It is the space where I want to escape family life, relax, beautify & be alone with my thoughts. In reality with two kids this isn’t always possible, my favourite children’s book “Five Minutes Peace” comes to mind.
This is a room where we should enjoy some alone time. Therefore, it’s a place where your surroundings can really impact your enjoyment of this space. So, let’s make it count, let’s make it luxurious but also let’s make it practical!
Before we get into the nitty detail, Sadie Pizzey interiors is a Surrey Interior design firm, but we service all of the UK & overseas. We share a monthly Newsletter, where we share top design tips, behind the scenes access and our favourite suppliers for sourcing! So, signup below!
Let’s Get Practical – Interior Designer Surrey, London, UK
The success of any bathroom project is making sure the design covers the practical requirements. What do you need to fit into this room? A bath? Just a shower? Vanity & sink? Etc. The size of the space is going to determine how grand or compact you can be with your design. In larger bathrooms, we always love a freestanding bath and a separate shower area. If it’s a small room, then we either create the shower and bath as a streamline design, where the shower leads into the bath with a minimum material palette. Or we have the shower within the bath.
Who is going to use it? If this is the main family bathroom, then this room will require a lot more storage and practical design than if it’s an ensuite shower room just for adults. For bathrooms used by kids, we want hidden storage in baths, walls & vanity units. The tile coverage ensures that there are no painted walls or impractical floors for water to mark or escape through. The bathroom vanity and space around the sink is important. If the sink is used by multi family members, then various toothbrushes and toiletries need to be around the sink, and the worktop space needs to bigger.
For ensuites used by couples, the double sink is brilliant. It enables the morning rush to be more efficient and you both have individual zones for storage. If the room is smaller with just a shower, we always recommend a wet room system. It allows the floor tile to continue into the shower with no tray or lip. The space instantly looks bigger and more impressive.
Heating is important in a bathroom. The ultimate luxury bathroom always has under floor heating, usually electric due to the size and efficiency. Then a separate towel rail for warming towels and adding further warmth.
What’s The Interior Design Process?
If you have followed our Surrey Interior design firm for a while, you will know we go on about the importance of spatial planning. It is even more important for a bathroom. There is actually a lot to pack into this often-smaller space. Making sure the right sanitaryware sizes and circulation is achieved, is vital.
Some important points to consider in a bathroom design:
- Showers need a minimum of 750mm width and ideally at least 900mm in length.
- Toilets need a minimum of 900mm width to not feel cramped.
- If you are hoping to achieve a double vanity with two sinks, a minimum of 1400mm width is needed.
- If a bath is small, it needs to be deeper to be comfortable.
Elevations are vital in you’re creating the ultimate luxury bathroom. This is all about the details, we aren’t winging it here! There is so much more to consider than just the sanitaryware.
Elevations are the drawings created to show each wall of your bathroom. They are vital for your plumber, tiler & electrician to get their placements right & also to provide accurate quotes.
Below shows some of our recent elevations. Sadie Pizzey Interiors currently has ten bathrooms in various design stages, so organisation & details are imperative! Our elevations shows tile design, trim placement & finishing heights. Luxury bathrooms are really elevated with lit niches, if there are any stud walls in your new space, then this a is perfect opportunity to carve out open, lit niches for toiletries, decoration etc or secret hidden cupboards for further storage, cleaning products etc.
Bathroom Lighting & Electrics – Surrey Interior Designer
Lighting & electrical drawings are created to show lighting & electrical additions. In UK bathrooms electrical sockets are not allowed, so if you want to charge your toothbrush or shaver, then low voltage shaver sockets need to be added.
*Our top tip is to hide these in secret cupboards, no one wants to see a toothbrush on charge!
Lighting in a bathroom is about practicality and scenes! A common mistake is to install a grid of down lights. Actually, it’s much more efficient to light the task areas, so place them above the toilet, in the shower and behind your vanity.
Down lights are all about task, but they aren’t warm and don’t create any ambience. It’s vital that you team these lights with other light sources. Wall lights, pendants or a back lit mirror above the vanity instantly elevates this zone.
As we mentioned if we can create a niche, we always light it with a hidden LED strip.
If we have a statement bath, then pendants above really add extra impact.
Finally, auto low-level lights that lights up when you approach, is a game changer in the dark.
How To Add The Interior Design Wow!
The ultimate luxury bathroom is all about the wow! The layout plays a huge part in this, but so does your material palette & choice of sanitaryware.
We mentioned in a shower that a wet room system is sleek & streamline. If this can’t be achieved, then a stone, recessed tray that is at the same level as the floor tile, is a great option. Matki will Ral match, so your colour choice is huge. We avoid using patterned floor tiles if we are using a tray. The recessed tray blends in far better with a plain, texture tile.
A freestanding bath in a large space, is our favourite bathroom addition. We are always client led; we have projects where the clients love a sleek, stone bath & we also have projects where a family want to enjoy an enormous tub with a whirlpool system. How you frame your bath is so important. I detest a tub squashed into a corner or off centre with an architectural element. If we have a large window, our preference is always to position the bath directly under that window. If the window is slightly off to the side, then that’s where the bath is positioned, and we use clever interior design to ensure the space makes sense.
Tile and wall finishes is everything in a bathroom. Our currently bathrooms are incorporating marble, checkerboard tiles, venetian plaster & aqua vertical panelling. Sample collation is vital to create a cohesive scheme. You can use different tiles, but they must have a red thread that ties them together. Choosing where to have tiles is important. As we said, with kids’ bathrooms our preference is complete tile coverage. With more adult spaces, we often design a combination of full and half wall tiles so that artwork can be incorporated.
Today’s toilet choice is incredible. A wall hung WC, is essential. The sleek, floating design instantly expresses luxury. If you have a small space, the more floor you see, the bigger the space feels. Wall hung toilets & vanity units really combats the small space feeling.
The Japanese toilet, integrated with hygienic clean, heated seats & air drying is being used more and more in residential homes. Pricewise, they are more and more competitive, so why not?
